April 5th, 2019

Rowenna eyed the truck pulled up alongside her little Prius, and wondered if it might be smarter to just have her and a couple others do a quick scouting mission into Winter Park first before sending in the loud truck. Under fifteen miles an hour, her car was dead silent, which was likely one of the reasons she and her older sister, Reyna, were alive now. That, and the soldier they'd run over in Colorado Springs last fall. Without him, they likely would have suffered a fate worse than zombification... if that was even a word.

Pulling her keys out of the pocket of her leather jacket, she unlocked her car and stalked around to the driver's side where she stashed her weapons. The Mossberg 500 was something she'd kept in the back of her shop, having gotten it for her eighteenth birthday from her Pa. And the Walther PPK was something she'd had in her purse since that one ex-boyfriend of hers thought "no" meant "yes". God bless Texas and their beautifully crafted gun laws.

Pulling off her nearly empty backpack, she set it between the seats where her purse used to go, and did a quick mental inventory of everything she had to work with - just in case she'd missed anything. She wasn't from the area, so going into something like this was going to take a lot of preparation work if she planned on making it back in one piece - with a lot of looted goods, too. That was where the other five women came in, as well...

They were from all walks of life here at the Sisterhood, but they all had the same goal: stay alive. That meant supply runs into the neighboring towns and cities. While the military could stride into Denver with a lot more ease, the recently formed Sisterhood had to take extra precautions and go at it with a whole lot more tact - given they didn't exactly have JLTVs and hundreds of soldiers working for them, nor the seemingly endless supply of ammo either.

Planning on hitting up Winter Park - a nearby ski town with a hotel and other small shops - the six women had all volunteered to risk their lives to find necessary supplies to keep their little community afloat. Straightening, she took in the other five women and had to wonder just what this little run had in store for them. Clearing her throat to get their attention, she jangled her set of keys and tried to cover her grim thoughts with an ambitious smirk. "Alright, I'm driving. Who's coming with me?"

It was hard to remember a time when Kaila was able to sleep in. She had always been more of a night owl and not so much an early riser. There was a time where she had to force herself to get up in the mornings, get out, when the big cats were still active. By mid day, they would be resting, especially the lions. The nights had been easy, she would work until tired and only then go to sleep, usually after her watch gave her a buzz that a new day had started. That old watch was gone now, broken a few months ago and she wasn’t the sentimental type to hold onto it.

Now though, the mornings were ones where she got up not because of an alarm or because of her natural rhythm, but because the slightest noise bumped her awake. She didn’t sleep the way she used to. After the horrors of reality, it wasn’t any surprise she had turned into a light sleeper, and once awake, she usually wasn’t able to fall back asleep.

Most days, this meant waking up and getting to work. She often went out scavenging in the woods around the convent, they were safe and she would have rather been amongst nature than be stuck inside. Still, she did her share of chores to earn her keep. She wasn’t a particularly good cook, but she could at least do the basics. There were times where she was needed more for the things she was good at, however, and today was one of those days.

Kaila had gotten her kit together and proceeded outside where the vehicles were staged before runs. She was to be one of six, a group of herself and her fellow “sisters.” A thought went to her actual siblings who she hadn’t heard from in over a year. Her brother who was with his fellow marines if he were still alive and her sister who at least had her husband. She hoped her family was fine, but with no way to know, that was the best she could have. Hope.

Coming out of the old religious building, Kaila joined with the others. She was in her regular attire, an old black button up long sleeve shirt that was too big for her tucked into her dark khaki cargo pants. Over the shirt was a camouflage jacket made for colder weather, left unzipped so she didn’t go overheating. Her black combat boots were in fairly good shape considering what they had been through, she had worked hard to keep good shoes on her feet given the dangers of the new world. While most of her climbing equipment was left behind in her room, her hand axe hung at her side. She didn’t bother with other weapons apart from that and the crowbar that was fitted into the molle on the outside of her bag. No firearms of any kind could be found on her person. A tube came snaking out of her backpack, her camelback tube looped up under her arm so it stayed close to her body and less likely to get caught up on something when running from something awful.

She was all smiles as she usually was. This was despite the fact that she could already feel a little shaking in her hands from the fear and excitement. She looked to the other women around her. Each one of them different, different stories, different backgrounds, as different from one another as any of the large felines she had gotten to know in Africa. Each one was their own brand of predator whether they saw themselves that way or not. Funny that before the world went to Hell she would have felt nervous sharing a home with women from some shady backgrounds… much less relying on them for mutual safety. Now they were a comfort. Women who were not soft. One thing about the world now, it had made survivors out of everyone. No matter how hard or how soft, feminine virtues valued by the world before meant nothing in the face of the necessities of the natural order.

Her sensitive ears caught the sound of a clearing throat and jingling keys, snapping her eyes to the source. Rowenna, one of the women she saw baking bread as often as coming out to go on missions. She had seen her plenty, maybe shared a word or two in passing, but she didn’t recall any conversations with the woman. At the question, Kaila stepped up to the Prius. It was her style of car… Clarification, a Land Rover used to be her style, but now she preferred vehicles that were quiet as could be. Better to be quiet and a lumbering tank that blundered its way through the streets like her old SUV. While it wouldn’t take on the elements the way hers had, it also wouldn’t cause every raider and fungus zombie in 30 miles to come running. “I’m with you.” She said with a smile, moving to the backseat and scooting herself into the middle so she could be between the driver and passenger, giving her a better view of the surroundings and giving her easy access to either side of the car if she had to egress quickly.

Hava's slumber or lack of had been restless and provoked by a continuous event of nightmares. Countless of distorted memories of her family being devoured, however, she would frequently be in their position in the recurring dream, suffering throughout the eternal pain as her siblings watched; surviving instead of her, and she longed for that to be the case. But she then proceeded to awake from the nightmare, the dream - weary-eyed and agitated. Hours passed by, as did the bypassers in the household; until she built enough nerve to remove herself from the bed, and to prepare herself for the scavenging mission that she planned to go on.

Beginning the day, Hava began by entering the bathroom and peering into the mirror, rejuvenating herself; whether that be mentally or physically, clearing her skin with bacterial soap. She received her usual attire from her drawers, dressing herself head-to-toe in the properly adjusted clothing that one would wear away from the community; layers upon layers. She wouldn't risk leaving her trusty baseball bat either, named Paula, after Paula Deen.

Her morning would consist of an average day for a teenager; dull, disheartening and startling. Although the contrast of those descriptive words would be additionally enhanced due to the environment she was placed into, an apocalyptic setting. In a way, Hava felt felt abnormal, having overbearing issues with letting the past remain in the past. Citizens from all walks of life suffered from depression or trauma at least once throughout their lives, Hava simply couldn't accept that in the moment. She couldn't accept the reality of the situation.

She marched from her bedroom, sneaking away from anybody who wanted to spark a conversation of any sorts. She directed herself from the main living area to the outside surroundings of The Sisterhood's Church. There would be five other individuals, women - crowded near a car, that seemed to be directed by a fierce brunette. Hava admired each person, mainly for the jeopardy they were placing themselves into to gather the necessary supplies for their relished group. Hava considered them easy on the eyes, that was another admirable trait that came alongside being apart of a community with dozens of other females.

It wouldn't particularly aid her mental well-being to be placed in a car with five other women, as they reminded her of her deceased sisters in all separate ways; whether that may be their language, their reactions to different events or their stubbornness. Any section of their personality could remind Hava of her family, as that was an aspect of grief. She appeared to be gloomy, under the weather, even. But that may be anxiety settling in, or the underlining issues she was facing mentally. "I'm as ready as one possibly could be," Hava spoke with enthusiasm, counter-attacking to her facial expressions. Her baseball bat swayed beside her torso as she approached the car. She couldn't pin-point any acquaintances, but then again, she only routinely communicated with a few people.

She smiled, "Let's do this." Hava's words had an animation to them, an eagerness; sliding into the passenger seat, glancing at the individuals in the passenger mirror to become more familiar with their presence, their expressions. With the utmost precaution, Hava secured herself as she injected her seat belt into the buckle. Due to her having grown up in the area and having had visited The Winter Park a various number of times, Hava wasn't too particularly vexed about foraging in that location; however, doing so with five other members of her community did, in fact, cause her to brood.

"Saddle up, ladies. Let's hope this is an easy ride." Taking in the two volunteers that chose her over the truck, Rowen gave them an upper nod with her chin - a silent sign of acceptance and respect. From what she knew of Kaila was she'd proven herself well enough as a scout. Her past lent plenty of skills to this sort of work, so she'd be the type any one of the Sisterhood members would be grateful to have at their side. She knew little about Hava, but she was young and fairly untested. This trip could go either way.

Her vibrant, auburn hair flipped a bit with natural curl as she turned and settled into the driver's seat of her car. Sliding the keys into the ignition, she waited until the other three women were settled in the truck parked next to hers and heading out before she pulled it into drive and pulled away from the Church. Hopefully they'd return before nightfall with plenty of goodies to pass around.

Following South Lake Drive around the lake, she caught a glimpse of the military milling about on the golf course - likely training for missions, or teaching new recruits a thing or two. Their buddy Sebastian had been a peach and helped her and Reyna learn a thing or two over the winter - which was why she felt comfortable enough going on this mission. It was also with his help they'd gotten security clearance to leave the city to help the Sisterhood scavenge for supplies.

Making a brief stop at the long tunnel that acted as the city's only means of entrance and exit, Rowenna flashed her badge and waited for the MPs on staff to check the other two in her vehicle before putting the city behind them. It was a slow going given the roads weren't being maintained by the State any more. The military did what they could, of course, but these days it was more about survivability than aesthetics.

With felled trees and fallen boulders littering the way, Rowenna kept pace with the truck ahead of them easily enough - given her little car had a better standard of maneuverability. It still made the trip a little more tense, never knowing if a zombie could step out onto the road, or if a set of boulders would shift and crush them on the way. Not to mention there was always risk of raiders hiding out - waiting to ambush unuspecting drivers.

The half-hour drive to Granby was quiet enough - her never-ending collection of CDs played lightly to help calm some nerves, though she didn't take her eyes off the road and surrounding area once. The small town had already been stripped of everything useful, sans the buildings themselves. It had been the first place the military had picked clean throughout the winter months to help keep Haven up and running.

Pulling around the corner, Rowenna's quick reflexes had her slamming on the breaks as the truck ahead of them smashed through three or four zombies as a small hoard roamed through the street. Cursing under her breath, Ro slid her car into reverse and backed away from the undead, but they'd already been spotted. Not being from this area, she looked to her companions for some advice. "We need a new route out of here! We'll have to meet the others in Winter Park. Any ideas?"

Kaila returned the nod that Rowen had given her with a tiny bow of her head. Simple gestures often spoke volumes, especially in those who had a shared interest. That was survival in this case. After getting into the car, she looked at the youngest woman when she entered as well. She saw her looking into the back seat through the mirror. She smiled, another friendly greeting. While Rowen couldn't have been much younger than Kaila, the other woman didn't even look old enough to drink... if the world still operated by its old laws.

She looked up to the sky. There were only a few clouds in the sky, the weather looked like it would be cooperative. It was still April, and there was only a bite of cold early in the morning and at night. She hoped this would be an uneventful trip with beautiful weather and still in relative vicinity to the military patrols, hopefully little to no interaction with any raiders.

Thoughts of what those sorts of men would probably do to a patrol of women caused a momentary feeling of dread before Kaila brushed it off. Everyone here was survivors. They were not defenseless. Still, she made a mental note to look after the other two women in the car with her, and hope they did the same for her if it was necessary. She stayed in the back, her seat belt buckled. Before the drive started she pulled her map out of her pocket. She sat quietly, keeping herself from torturing either of the other women with her off key singing along to the music provided. Best to not give them a reason to leave her for dead, she thought with a smirk.

The ride was every bit as calm as could be hoped for straight up until the point they reached Granby. Road blocks from the days before all civilization came to an end still remained. She thought about what they would look like in 10 years, then 20, then a hundred more. The car turned, following the truck in front of them as they began navigating the streets. Another turn, this time onto Jasper lead to a sudden stop. Her head jerked forward and the walking dead in the road caused her heart to drop. They were slammed into reverse and Kaila's eyes went to her map. "Continue up First street to E. Diamond and make a right. I have a roadblock marked on Topaz and Garnet. Then another right on 4th." Kaila kept her map out, but at this point, she started going over her equipment in case they had to bail out of the car. A hoard, even a small one of the slow moving zombies could be dangerous. They didn't stop and they didn't rest for anything. Once they found something, they would pursue it so long as it either continued to be in their path or if they could sense it.

As they finally drove away from the church, Hava felt an anticipation overcome her; fixating on remaining levelheaded and figuratively putting on a brave face in front of the fellow survivors. The car's movement wasn't tiring, it did, however, comfort the girl as she rested her head against the padding of the seat longingly. Her eyes gazed toward the side of the moving car, envisioning a figure running beside the car, as she dazed into an imaginative state briefly.

The car paused as an examination by the military went underway, as to be expected. This didn't phase her, in fact, it was reassuring to know that there was some aspect of hope left in the restoration of nature and the environments around them; although the appearance of the neighboring would suggest otherwise. At least in this circumstance, Hava was allowed to listen to some form of music and not the continuous distorted rambling from the infected. Either way, she actively attempted to remember the direction of her surroundings, to react on cue to potential danger provoking situations.

As hardened as she would prefer to appear, her imagination truly knew no limits, impersonating and curiously contemplating about the different personalities surrounding her in the car. In her case, it was definitely a way to release the tension, to be able to relate and better her communication skills with the fellow survivors she would have to aid and be aided by eventually. No one truly knew what happened to lurk for them until the inevitable happened, whether that may be the infected or those who have turned a blind eye to their morals.

Her spiraled thoughts soon would be halted, the entirety of her body being forced forward vaguely as Rowenna ceased the car from moving any further toward the small hoard that happened to be in front of the female passengers on the road. Despite knowing the answer that Rowenna queried, Hava wasn't instinctively prepared to answer after the crash; prone to uninterrupted silence when around hoards, or infected individuals. Her nerves had gotten the better of her in that specific moment, thankful that auburn-haired woman answered for her instead; nodding her head in agreement with the directions she had given. "Couldn't have said it better myself," she apprehensively whispered underneath her breath. She unquestionably didn't appreciate the direction that the plan advanced into whatsoever.

Taking Kaila's advice, Rowenna kept her head and her wits about her - maneuvering around mountains of rotting garbage as it warmed in the early spring sun, around crashed cars that were covered in old blood and melting snow, and down streets strewn with decaying bodies, wet paper, and general litter. She'd never been here before, but the thought of what this little town might have looked like before the fall was almost disheartening. It reminded her of small towns from back home, and made her chest ache.

Turning the wheel as she maneuvered her vehicle through tight spaces and around corners, she finally managed to get them free of the mess downtown Grandby had become. Back out onto the highway, there was no sign of their lead truck, so she grabbed up the CB they had installed and handed it off to Kaila. "See if you can get a hold of them. I know reception is supposed to be spotty and there's a risk of other survivors hearing, but I'm not about to lose them if they went back for us."

Slowing the car just a bit as they continued on down to Winter Park, Rowen's bright eyes were peeled for any signs of life - or unlife, even. There were cars and trucks littering the way until they were outside the town, and from there all she could see was the winding highway heading southward. A hard swallow made her wonder if she shouldn't turn back - but she knew the three women in that truck were more than capable of handling themselves in a bind. After all, that was why they came along on this mission.

Shaking her head when there was no reply on the radio, Rowen made the hard choice and decided to continue on to Winter Park. If nothing else, they would have to come back through Grandby on their way home, and they could look to see if they needed help. Thankfully, it was somewhere after the highway curved east that they found the other three and the truck - parked on the side of the road, trying to call for Ro, Kaila, and Hava. A chortle escaped her as she pulled up along side them, and rolled down the window.

"We thought we lost you girls!" The big blonde driver said with a relieved look on her face. With a shake of her head, she waved them on before starting up the truck again. Rowenna gave them a thumbs up and took point as the two vehicles headed onward towards their destination. Tabernash and Fraser were far less stressful, so by the time they reached Winter Park and parked downtown, she was ready for a fucking smoke, snack, and nap already. "Okay, we'll start at the Event Center and go from there. Stay close, be quiet, and keep sharp!"
